Peroneal nerve compression neuropathy is a common cause of exercise-induced leg pain in athletes. Surgical decompression offers excellent results, allowing athletes to return to their previous physical exertion levels.

Area of Science:

  • Sports Medicine
  • Neurology
  • Orthopedic Surgery

Background:

  • Exercise-induced leg pain is common in athletes.
  • Peroneal nerve compression neuropathy can cause significant discomfort and functional limitation.

Observation:

  • Seven runners and one soccer player presented with peroneal nerve compression neuropathy.
  • Symptoms included pain, numbness, and tingling during exercise, with muscle weakness and positive percussion tests observed post-exercise.

Findings:

  • Nerve conduction velocity studies confirmed the diagnosis in five patients.
  • Surgical neurolysis of the peroneal nerve at the fibular neck was performed on all eight patients.
  • Seven of eight patients experienced excellent outcomes, returning to their prior level of physical activity without recurrence of symptoms.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Entrapment of the peroneal nerve at the fibular neck may be more prevalent than previously recognized.
  • This condition should be considered in the differential diagnosis of exertional lateral leg pain in athletes.
  • Surgical intervention provides a highly effective treatment option for athletes suffering from this condition.
