Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures01:22

Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures

4.7K
Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility.
The best practices for preventing healthcare-associated infections include hand hygiene, patient risk...

Types of Reports II: Incident or Occurrence Report

1.3K
An Incident or Occurrence Report in a healthcare setting is a crucial document used to record any unexpected occurrence that may or may not have affected a patient, employee, or visitor. Such reports are critical to improving patient safety and include all details leading up to and including the event.
Purposes:
In the healthcare industry, reports play a crucial role in documenting incidents within an agency. The primary objective of these reports is to ensure patient safety, uphold the...

Healthcare Associated Infections I: Iatrogenic, Exogenic and Endogenic

6.4K
Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) occur in a healthcare facility while a person receives care for another ailment. This category also includes work-related infections among healthcare staff.
HAIs significantly increase the cost of health care. Extended stays in healthcare institutions, increased disability, increased costs of medications, including specialized antibiotics, and prolonged recovery times add to the patient's expenses and the healthcare institution and funding bodies.

Ethical Standards I01:25

Ethical Standards I

1.7K
The American Nurses Association (ANA) created and implemented the first nationally accepted Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements. The Code of Ethics is a living document regularly updated by the ANA and establishes an ethical standard that is non-negotiable for nurses in all roles and settings.
The Code of Ethics provisions outline the nurse's duty to the patient, the healthcare team, the profession, and society. The Code's fundamental principles include advocacy,...

Introduction to Documentation and Reporting

3.4K
Documentation is the systematic process of formally recording, maintaining, and communicating information.
Nursing documentation records essential information and details regarding a patient's care and treatment in written or electronic form. It is a critical aspect of nursing practice that involves documenting assessments, interventions, outcomes, and other relevant details about a patient's health status.
Documentation maps the patient's health journey by creating a comprehensive...

Area of Science:

  • Healthcare quality measurement
  • Public health communication
  • Health informatics

Background:

  • Hospital-acquired infection (HAI) data is publicly available on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website.
  • Previous research indicates poor public comprehension of the current HAI data presentation.
  • There is a need for improved methods to enhance public understanding of crucial healthcare quality metrics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate an improved method for presenting HAI data for public use on the CMS website.
  • To compare the effectiveness of a new data presentation strategy against the current CMS strategy in improving public understanding.
  • To assess public interest in using websites for comparing hospital performance.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial was conducted at a tertiary referral hospital.
  • 61 patients were randomly assigned to view HAI data using either the current CMS presentation or a new experimental method.
  • Participant understanding of comparative hospital data was assessed between the two groups.

Main Results:

  • The new data presentation method resulted in a statistically significant increase in correct hospital comparisons (56%) compared to the current CMS method (32%, P=.0002).
  • No significant demographic differences were found between the study groups.
  • A majority of participants (47%) found a hospital comparison website helpful, though only 10% had used one previously.

Conclusions:

  • The novel data presentation strategy significantly enhances public understanding of HAI data compared to the existing CMS Hospital Compare website format.
  • Adopting improved presentation methods for CMS HAI data is recommended to increase public comprehension and informed decision-making.
  • Public interest in hospital comparison tools suggests a demand for more accessible healthcare quality information.
