Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Nursing Science
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Nursing is a demanding profession with significant implications for healthcare professionals' well-being.
  • High levels of job stress in nurses can negatively affect their physical and mental health, potentially reducing efficiency.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of job stress on the physical and mental health of nurses.
  • To identify key stressors within the nursing profession and their effect on nurse efficiency.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional descriptive survey design was employed.
  • Data were collected from 394 nurses across three hospitals in China using a socio-demographic questionnaire and a nursing stress scale.

Main Results:

  • "Nursing profession and work issues" emerged as the most significant stressor, with "shift work" identified as the highest individual stressor.
  • Temporary contract nurses reported higher stress levels than permanent contract nurses (p=.038).
  • Nurses in intensive care units experienced the highest stress levels (1.32 ± 0.948).

Conclusions:

  • Nurses face a high risk of morbidity due to prolonged working hours and fast-paced environments without adequate stress management.
  • The findings underscore the critical need for implementing stress management strategies in nursing to mitigate adverse health outcomes and maintain efficiency.
