Summary

Prostaglandins (PGs) are elevated in middle ear effusions (MEEs) from patients with otitis media. Mucoid effusions showed significantly higher PG levels than serous effusions, suggesting a role in middle ear inflammation.

Background:

  • Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a common condition characterized by fluid in the middle ear.
  • Prostaglandins (PGs) are lipid compounds with diverse hormone-like effects, implicated in inflammation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify prostaglandin concentrations in middle ear effusions (MEEs) from OME patients.
  • To compare PG levels between serous and mucoid MEE subtypes.

Main Methods:

  • Radioimmunoassay (RIA) was used to measure PG concentrations.
  • MEE samples were categorized into serous and mucoid groups.
  • Protein concentrations were also analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Thromboxane B2 (TXB2) and Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) were the most abundant PGs in MEEs.
