Background:

Mobile computing and wireless communication have advanced online data capture.
A need exists for offline data capture in medical research, particularly when internet connectivity is unreliable.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the requirements, procedure, and implementation of an offline data capture system for the "BreathEase" clinical study.
To merge interview questionnaire data captured offline with a stationary central database.

Main Methods:

An existing electronic data capture system (DBFORM) was adapted to include clinical trial management features.
A module was developed to synchronize data between mobile and stationary databases.

Main Results:

Offline data capture followed by online synchronization was shown to be feasible.
Potential ambiguities arising from data synchronization were identified.

Conclusions:

Offline data capture is a viable solution for medical research requiring data collection in environments with intermittent connectivity.
Technical and procedural measures are necessary to address potential data ambiguities during synchronization.
