Summary

Microureteroscopy effectively treats pediatric ureteral stones. This minimally invasive technique offers a safe and rapid solution for young patients with urinary lithiasis, avoiding complications and enabling quick recovery.

Background:

  • Urinary stone disease (lithiasis) incidence is rising in children.
  • Ureteroscopy is increasingly utilized for pediatric ureteral stones, facilitated by endoscope miniaturization.
  • Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy remains a common treatment, but ureteroscopy offers an alternative.

Observation:

  • This study presents two pediatric cases of pelvic ureteral stones causing ureterohydronephrosis.
  • Microureteroscopy utilizing a MicroPerc set with a 4.85F sheath was performed for diagnosis and treatment.
  • The procedure avoided ureteral meatus dilation and the need for a safety guide.

Findings:

  • Microureteroscopy successfully diagnosed and treated ureteral lithiasis in both pediatric patients.
  • The use of a 4.85F sheath facilitated exploration of the pelvic ureter.
  • Patients experienced no need for postoperative ureteral stents and were discharged within 24 hours.

Implications:

  • Microureteroscopy is a satisfactory and effective treatment for pediatric ureteral pathology.
  • This technique allows for simultaneous diagnosis and treatment of ureteral stones in children.
  • The minimally invasive approach may reduce patient recovery time and hospital stay.
