Vesicourethral anastomotic disruption after robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy is rare. This case report details successful conservative management of complete VUA disruption with bladder displacement.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Surgical Oncology
- Minimally Invasive Surgery
Background:
- Robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) is a common procedure for prostate cancer.
- Vesicourethral anastomotic (VUA) disruption is a rare complication following radical prostatectomy.
- Complete VUA disruption with bladder displacement is exceptionally rare, with no prior reports after robotic surgery.
Observation:
- A patient developed complete VUA disruption and bladder displacement into the abdominal cavity post-RALP.
- The complication was associated with a large pelvic hematoma.
- This presentation is unprecedented in the literature following robotic prostatectomy.
Findings:
- The reported case of VUA disruption and bladder displacement was successfully managed conservatively.
- Conservative management is the predominant approach for VUA leakage and minor disruptions.
- This case expands the understanding of potential VUA complications and their management.
Implications:
- This case highlights the possibility of rare but significant complications after RALP.
- Conservative management can be effective even in severe VUA disruptions with bladder displacement.
- Further research may explore risk factors and optimal management strategies for such rare events.
