Background:

  • In-transit metastasis from cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncommon lymphatic spread.
  • It occurs more frequently in immunosuppressed individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify cases of in-transit SCC.
  • Determine patient characteristics, tumor features, management, and prognosis.

Main Methods:

  • A multicenter case series.
  • Data collected from Australian and New Zealand clinicians.

Main Results:

  • 31 patients with in-transit SCC were analyzed.
  • Most tumors (94%) were on the head and neck, particularly scalp, forehead, and temple.
  • 5-year survival was poor at 13%.

Conclusions:

  • The majority of in-transit SCC patients were immunocompetent.
  • Proposed new diagnostic criteria for in-transit SCC.
  • Recommended management includes surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy, alongside reducing immunosuppression.
