Cancer Survival Analysis01:21

Cancer Survival Analysis

811
Cancer survival analysis focuses on quantifying and interpreting the time from a key starting point, such as diagnosis or the initiation of treatment, to a specific endpoint, such as remission or death. This analysis provides critical insights into treatment effectiveness and factors that influence patient outcomes, helping to shape clinical decisions and guide prognostic evaluations. A cornerstone of oncology research, survival analysis tackles the challenges of skewed, non-normally...

Functions of Thyroid Hormones01:18

Functions of Thyroid Hormones

6.4K
The thyroid hormone (TH) plays a pivotal role in the intricate orchestration of physiological processes, exerting profound effects on development, metabolism, and homeostasis throughout different life stages.
TH is indispensable for the normal development and maturation of the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems during fetal and childhood growth. It facilitates bone mineral turnover and regulates protein synthesis in developing tissues, contributing significantly to overall growth and...

Targeted Cancer Therapies02:57

Targeted Cancer Therapies

9.1K
The targeted cancer therapies, also known as “molecular targeted therapies,” take advantage of the molecular and genetic differences between the cancer cells and the normal cells. It needs a thorough understanding of the cancer cells to develop drugs that can target specific molecular aspects that drive the growth, progression, and spread of cancer cells without affecting the growth and survival of other normal cells in the body.
There are several types of targeted therapies against...

Synthesis and Regulation of Thyroid Hormones01:20

Synthesis and Regulation of Thyroid Hormones

8.7K
Low blood levels of the thyroid hormones — triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) — signal the hypothalamus to release the thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). TRH then reaches the pituitary gland and stimulates the release of thyroid-stimulating hormone(TSH) into the bloodstream.
Upon reaching the thyroid gland, TSH stimulates the follicular cells' active uptake of iodide ions from the blood. The ions diffuse to the apical surface of the cells and are oxidized to iodine. The...

The Thyroid Gland01:23

The Thyroid Gland

8.4K
The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck and covers the anterior surface of the trachea. The gland has two lateral lobes connected by a thin tissue mass called the isthmus. Internally, each lobe comprises many small spherical structures known as thyroid follicles, surrounded by a network of blood vessels.
The follicles have a central cavity lined by simple cuboidal to squamous epithelial cells called follicular cells. These cells produce the glycoprotein...

Summary

Higher free thyroxine (free T4) levels were associated with improved breast cancer survival in women. This finding suggests thyroid function may impact prognosis for breast cancer patients.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Oncology
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Thyroid function is linked to breast cancer risk and cell proliferation.
  • The impact of thyroid function on breast cancer prognosis remains unclear.
  • This study investigates thyroid hormones and antibodies in relation to breast cancer survival.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the association between thyroid function markers and breast cancer survival.
  • To determine if free tri-iodothyronine (T3), free thyroxine (T4), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO-Ab) influence breast cancer mortality.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective cohort study of 17,035 women in the Malmö Diet and Cancer Study (Sweden).
  • Incident breast cancer cases identified via cancer registries (1991-2006).
  • Breast cancer mortality endpoint assessed through December 2013 using Cox proportional hazards analysis.

Main Results:

  • Lower breast cancer mortality observed in the second tertile of free T4 levels (HR 0.49).
  • A non-significant trend for lower mortality was noted with higher TSH and positive TPO-Ab status.
  • Free T3 levels showed no significant association with breast cancer mortality.

Conclusions:

  • A positive association exists between higher free T4 levels and improved breast cancer survival.
  • Thyroid hormone levels, particularly free T4, may play a role in breast cancer prognosis.
