Area of Science:

  • Pediatric neurology
  • Biomechanics
  • Human motor control

Background:

  • Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) can cause postural control deficits.
  • Understanding normal postural control in children is crucial for mTBI diagnosis.
  • Limited research exists on typical postural control patterns in young children.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate normal postural control in school-aged children.
  • To identify diurnal variations in children's balance.
  • To establish a baseline for comparison with mTBI-related deficits.

Main Methods:

  • Eight healthy school-aged children participated.
  • Postural control was assessed using the Balance Master® system.
  • Assessments were conducted in the morning and late afternoon on school days.

Main Results:

  • Significant differences in weight-bearing squats were found between morning and afternoon.
  • Children exhibited more left-sided weight bearing with extended knees in the afternoon.
  • Directional control during lateral weight shifts improved significantly by the afternoon.

Conclusions:

  • Children's postural control capacity and balance vary between morning and afternoon.
  • Findings suggest age-related differences in posture control compared to adults.
  • Posturographic assessments in children are recommended for late afternoon for accuracy.
