Background:
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease involving autoimmune processes affecting myelin.
- CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells and B-cells are key players in MS pathophysiology.
- The co-occurrence of MS with other autoimmune diseases is documented, but its impact on MS clinical course is unclear.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of other autoimmune diseases in patients with MS.
- To investigate if co-existing autoimmune diseases influence the clinical progression of MS.
Main Methods:
- A retrospective study of 1700 MS patients over two years at Sina Hospital MS clinic.
- Identified 24 patients with MS and a simultaneous autoimmune disease.
- Compared Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores between patients with co-existing autoimmune diseases and a control group.
Main Results:
- The prevalence of concomitant autoimmune disease and MS was 0.014.
- Patients with co-existing autoimmune diseases had a significantly lower mean EDSS (1.62±1.12) compared to the control group (3.33±1.89) (P<0.001).
- No significant difference was observed in the mean annual relapse rate between the groups.
Conclusions:
- Co-existence of other autoimmune diseases with MS appears to modify the disease course, potentially leading to less disability.
- Further multicenter, prospective, long-term studies are warranted to validate these findings.
