Summary

Hyaline protoplasmic astrocytopathy is a rare neurological disorder associated with chronic seizures. This study found a strong link between this condition and focal cortical dysplasia in all patients.

Background:

  • Hyaline protoplasmic astrocytopathy is a rare condition characterized by protein accumulation in protoplasmic astrocytes.
  • This disorder is often associated with neurological deficits, particularly seizures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinicopathologic features of hyaline protoplasmic astrocytopathy.
  • To identify associated conditions and patterns of cortical dysplasia.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 14 patients diagnosed with hyaline protoplasmic astrocytopathy.
  • Analysis of clinical data, seizure history, and neuropathologic findings, including cortical dysplasia classification.

  • All 14 patients exhibited focal cortical dysplasia (FCD), with various International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) types observed.

  • Postoperative seizure outcomes varied, with 7 patients achieving good seizure control (Engel I/II).

Conclusions:

  • Hyaline protoplasmic astrocytopathy is consistently associated with focal cortical dysplasia.
  • A significant association with Aicardi syndrome is also supported by this series.
  • Understanding these associations is crucial for diagnosis and management of affected children.
