Migraine and type 2 diabetes; is there any association?

Migraine prevalence is similar in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients and non-diabetics. However, T2DM duration and hypoglycemia attacks are linked to migraine in diabetic individuals.

Conclusions:

  • No significant difference in migraine prevalence between T2DM and non-diabetic groups after age/sex adjustment.
  • Hypoglycemia attacks and T2DM duration are significant risk factors for migraine in T2DM patients.
  • Reducing hypoglycemia in long-standing T2DM may decrease migraine incidence.
