Summary

Sertraline effectively prevents depression after traumatic brain injury (TBI). This study found a number needed to treat of 5.9 for sertraline in preventing depressive disorders post-TBI over 24 weeks.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of sertraline in preventing depressive disorders after TBI.
  • To assess sertraline's role in mitigating depression in TBI patients.

Main Methods:

  • A 24-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial.
  • 94 patients hospitalized for TBI were randomized to receive either placebo or sertraline (100 mg/d).
  • Primary outcome was the time to onset of DSM-IV defined depressive disorders.
