Summary

Ultrasonic elastography (USE) can detect optic nerve stiffness in optic neuritis (ON). This safe and accessible technique may aid in diagnosing ON by identifying tissue stiffness.

Background:

  • Optic neuritis (ON) is an inflammatory condition affecting the optic nerve.
  • Accurate diagnosis of ON is crucial for timely treatment and management.
  • Current diagnostic methods may have limitations in detecting subtle changes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasonic elastography (USE) in diagnosing optic neuritis (ON).
  • To determine if USE can identify differences in optic nerve tissue stiffness between affected and healthy eyes.

Main Methods:

  • A study included 13 patients with unilateral ON, comparing affected and unaffected eyes.
  • Ultrasonography (US) and USE examinations were performed on optic nerves and adjacent tissues.
  • Optic nerve diameter was also measured for comparison.

Main Results:

  • Mean USE values were significantly higher in ON eyes (2.58 m/s) compared to normal eyes (1.91 m/s) for optic nerve tissue (p=0.001).

  • Ultrasonic elastography (USE) is a safe and accessible technique for assessing optic nerve stiffness.
  • USE shows potential as an adjunctive tool for confirming optic neuritis diagnoses.
  • The findings suggest USE can detect significant tissue stiffness associated with ON.
