Background:

  • Teratomas are tumors with diverse tissue types, including neural elements.
  • The presence and role of microglia, the resident immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS), in non-CNS teratomas are not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence and characteristics of microglia in human teratomas outside the CNS.
  • To determine the relationship between microglia and markers of neural maturity or differentiation within these tumors.

Main Methods:

  • Studied ten human teratomas using immunohistochemical and lectin histochemical stains.
  • Identified microglia using silver carbonate and Ricinus communis agglutinin-1 (RCA-1) markers.
  • Assessed neural maturity using markers such as S-100, glial fibrillary acidic protein, vimentin, neurofilament, and synaptophysin.
