Subconsciousness and No Awareness01:15

Subconsciousness and No Awareness

776
The concept of subconscious awareness refers to the processing of information below the level of conscious thought, which significantly influences both behaviors and decisions. It is also known as waking subconscious awareness. This complex level of cognition operates without the direct awareness of the individual, facilitating rapid and simultaneous handling of multiple information streams.
An illustrative example of subconscious processing is its role in problem-solving. Often, individuals...

Self-Awareness and Its Effects

354
Self-awareness is a psychological state in which the individual becomes the focal point of their attention. This inward focus transforms the self into an object of contemplation and assessment, influencing how individuals perceive their actions and their alignment with personal and societal standards.Triggers and Contexts for Self-AwarenessSelf-awareness can be activated by external stimuli that make individuals visually or audibly aware of themselves, such as mirrors, cameras, or recordings.

Summary

Adults who stutter (AWS) frequently anticipate speech disruptions. The new German Premonitory Awareness in Stuttering Scale (PAiS) effectively measures this anticipation, finding higher scores in AWS who stutter less.

Area of Science:

  • Speech and Language Pathology
  • Psycholinguistics
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Anticipation of stuttering is crucial for understanding persistent developmental stuttering.
  • Current measurement of stuttering anticipation is insufficient for clinical and theoretical use.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a German version of the Premonitory Awareness in Stuttering Scale (PAiS).
  • To assess the psychometric properties and clinical utility of the PAiS in adults who stutter (AWS).

Main Methods:

  • Translation and adaptation of the Premonitory Urge for Tics Scale (PUTS) into German to create the PAiS.
  • Administered the PAiS to 21 adults who stutter and 21 matched controls.
  • Analyzed internal consistency, group discrimination, and correlations with stuttering severity measures.

Main Results:

  • The German PAiS demonstrated good internal consistency.
  • Adults who stutter reported significantly higher PAiS scores than controls.
  • Higher PAiS scores correlated with reduced stuttering severity, suggesting adaptive speech modulation.

Conclusions:

  • The PAiS is a promising tool for quantifying stuttering anticipation in clinicians and researchers.
  • Further refinement of the PAiS could enhance its psychometric soundness and practical application.
  • Understanding stuttering anticipation may aid in developing targeted interventions for AWS.
