  • 11,260 preschool children (aged 3-5 years) in Los Angeles County were screened using the Retinomax Autorefractor.
  • 1007 children who failed screening underwent a full ophthalmic examination by an ophthalmologist.
  • Main Results:

    • 74% of examined children received glasses prescriptions.
    • Prevalence of hyperopia was 58%, myopia 21%, and astigmatism ≥1.50 D was 69%.
    • Refractive amblyopia was diagnosed in 9% of examined children (0.8% of the total screened population), with 77% being unilateral.

    Conclusions:

    • Retinomax Autorefractor screening effectively identifies preschool children with uncorrected refractive errors and amblyopia.
    • Early diagnosis and treatment of these conditions can prevent amblyopia and enhance quality of life and academic achievement.
    • Vision screening programs are vital for early intervention in pediatric eye care.
