Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture01:27

Ethnic Identity within a Larger Culture

369
Adolescents from ethnic minority backgrounds face a multifaceted journey in forming their identities, shaped by the intersections of cultural expectations and personal exploration. For these adolescents, identity formation involves not only typical developmental challenges but also navigating the perceptions and attitudes of the majority culture. As they grow, adolescents in ethnic minority groups often become increasingly aware of stereotypes, social biases, and discrimination, all of which...

Implicit Personality Theories

585
Implicit personality theory explains how individuals make assumptions about the relationships between personality traits, behaviors, and character types. When people learn that someone possesses a particular trait, they tend to infer the presence of other related characteristics, forming a cohesive impression. This cognitive shortcut plays a crucial role in social interactions and interpersonal judgments.Central Traits and Their InfluenceSolomon Asch's seminal 1946 study highlighted the power...

Stereotypes, Prejudice, and Discrimination

95.9K
Humans are very diverse and although we share many similarities, we also have many differences. The social groups we belong to help form our identities (Tajfel, 1974). These differences may be difficult for some people to reconcile, which may lead to prejudice toward people who are different. Prejudice is a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010). Prejudice is common against people who...

Latitudes and Departures01:27

Latitudes and Departures

706
Latitudes and departures are essential concepts in surveying, providing a systematic way to analyze the projections of traverse lines. These projections allow surveyors to interpret a line's north-south and east-west components, which are crucial for precisely calculating areas, bearings, and lengths. Latitude is the north-south projection of a line, calculated as the product of the line's length and the cosine of its bearing. Departure, conversely, is the east-west projection obtained by...

Methods of Obtaining Topography

423
Topography involves measuring and mapping land elevations, natural features, and artificial structures to create accurate representations of the terrain. Topographic surveying relies on traditional and modern methods, each with distinct advantages and limitations.Traditional Surveying Methods:Transit stadia surveys and plane table surveys were widely used traditional surveying methods. These techniques relied on instruments like theodolites and stadia rods for measuring distances and angles,...

Social Identity01:29

Social Identity

412
Social identity constitutes a significant aspect of an individual’s self-concept, shaped by membership in various social groups, including gender, nationality, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and political affiliation. Individuals associate specific traits with particular social groups, leading to internalization of these traits. For example, musicians are often perceived as creative, while women are frequently associated with nurturing tendencies. Once individuals identify with a...

Summary

The new Landscape Identity Implicit Association Test (LI-IAT) reliably measures implicit identification with European and Mediterranean landscapes. This tool shows higher identification with these regions compared to non-European or non-Mediterranean ones.

Area of Science:

  • Social Psychology
  • Environmental Psychology
  • Cultural Geography

Background:

  • Understanding landscape identity is crucial for cultural and environmental studies.
  • Previous research often relies on explicit self-report measures, which may be subject to social desirability bias.
  • Implicit measures offer a valuable alternative for assessing subconscious connections to place.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce and validate the Landscape Identity Implicit Association Test (LI-IAT) for measuring implicit identification with European and Mediterranean landscapes.
  • To assess the psychometric properties and criterion validity of the LI-IAT.
  • To compare implicit landscape identification with explicit place identity and landscape pleasantness ratings.

Main Methods:

  • Development of prototypical landscape stimuli for European/Mediterranean and Not-European/Not-Mediterranean categories.
  • Administration of two LI-IATs to 174 participants in Italy, assessing European vs. Not-European and Mediterranean vs. Not-Mediterranean identification.
  • Collection of self-report data on place identity and landscape pleasantness for criterion validity assessment.

Main Results:

  • Both LI-IATs demonstrated adequate internal consistency.
  • Participants showed significantly higher implicit identification with European and Mediterranean landscapes compared to Not-European and Not-Mediterranean landscapes.
  • A significant positive correlation was found between LI-IAT scores and corresponding self-reported place identity, even after controlling for landscape pleasantness.

Conclusions:

  • The Landscape Identity Implicit Association Test (LI-IAT) provides a reliable and valid measure of implicit identification with European and Mediterranean landscapes.
  • Findings support the utility of implicit measures in understanding people's connection to their regional environments.
  • This research offers a novel tool for exploring subconscious regional affiliations and their psychological underpinnings.
