Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) demonstrated significant improvement in sterile pyogranulomatous pododermatitis in dogs. This pilot study suggests LLLT is a promising treatment option with no reported adverse effects.
Area of Science:
- Veterinary Dermatology
- Photomedicine
- Biotechnology
Background:
- Sterile pyogranulomatous pododermatitis is a challenging canine skin condition.
- Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) utilizes photobiostimulation for anti-inflammatory and tissue healing effects.
Purpose of the Study:
- To pilot the efficacy of LLLT in treating sterile pyogranulomatous pododermatitis in dogs.
- To compare LLLT with conventional hydrocortisone aceponate spray.
Main Methods:
- A pilot study involving five dogs with sterile pyogranulomatous pododermatitis.
- Lesions were treated daily for 5 days with either a gallium aluminum arsenide-laser or hydrocortisone aceponate spray.
- Clinical scoring was performed at multiple time points: D0, D4, D20, and D65.
Main Results:
- LLLT-treated lesions showed statistically significant improvement by D4 and D20 compared to controls.
- The LLLT group exhibited significant improvement over time (D0, D4, D20).
- Over 50% of LLLT-treated lesions showed no recurrence at D65, with no adverse reactions reported.
Conclusions:
- LLLT shows positive preliminary results for sterile pyogranulomatous pododermatitis in dogs.
- Further studies are warranted to confirm LLLT's therapeutic value in this condition.
- LLLT presents a potentially safe and effective treatment modality.
