The Carbon Cycle01:14

The Carbon Cycle

45.3K
Carbon is the basis of all organic matter on Earth, and is recycled through the ecosystem in two primary processes: one in which carbon is exchanged among living organisms, and one in which carbon is cycled over long periods of time through fossilized organic remains, weathering of rocks, and volcanic activity. Human activities, including increased agricultural practices and the burning of fossil fuels, has greatly affected the balance of the natural carbon cycle.

Bioremediation00:46

Bioremediation

22.7K
Bioremediation is the use of prokaryotes, fungi, or plants to remove pollutants from the environment. This process has been used to remove harmful toxins in groundwater as a byproduct of agricultural run-off and also to clean up oil spills.

Carbon-dioxide Fixation01:28

Carbon-dioxide Fixation

824
Carbon dioxide fixation in prokaryotes enables the assimilation of inorganic carbon into organic molecules, supporting biosynthetic pathways, sustaining ecosystems, and contributing to the global carbon cycle. It also has industrial applications in carbon capture and bioproduct synthesis. Autotrophic organisms rely on this process to utilize CO₂ as a carbon source in diverse environments. The Calvin CycleThe Calvin cycle is the most widespread carbon fixation mechanism, primarily used by...

Global Climate Change01:50

Global Climate Change

29.4K
Throughout its ~4.5 billion year history, the Earth has experienced periods of warming and cooling. However, the current drastic increase in global temperatures is well outside of the Earth’s cyclic norms, and evidence for human-caused global climate change is compelling. Paleoclimatology, the study of ancient climate conditions, provides ample evidence for human-caused global climate change by comparing recent conditions with those in the past.

C4 Pathway and CAM01:27

C4 Pathway and CAM

50.0K
Most plants use the C3 pathway for carbon fixation. However, some plants, such as sugar cane, corn, and cacti that grow in hot conditions, use alternative pathways to fix carbon and conserve energy loss due to photorespiration. Photorespiration is the process that occurs when the oxygen concentration is high. Under such conditions, the rubisco enzyme in the Calvin cycle binds O2 instead of CO2, which halts photosynthesis and consumes energy.

The C4 pathway is used by plants such as...

What are Biogeochemical Cycles?00:54

What are Biogeochemical Cycles?

40.2K
The most common elements in organic molecules, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus, are only available in the ecosystem in limited amounts. Therefore, these nutrients must be recycled through both biotic and abiotic components of the ecosystem, in processes generally called biogeochemical cycles.

    Summary

Nursing home managers are angry about a UK Central Council report on care standards. Despite welcome recommendations, the Government and Registered Nursing Homes Association dispute the report's data.

    Area of Science:

    • Healthcare Management
    • Geriatric Care Standards
    • Regulatory Compliance

    Background:

    • A controversial report by the UK Central Council (UKCC) on nursing home standards has been released.
    • The report's findings have generated significant debate within the healthcare sector.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To summarize the key findings and recommendations of the UKCC report on nursing home standards.
    • To document the reactions of nursing home managers, the Government, and the Registered Nursing Homes Association to the report.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of the UK Central Council's report on nursing home standards.
    • Review of published responses from nursing home managers, governmental bodies, and the Registered Nursing Homes Association.

    • The report's recommendations for improving nursing home standards have been generally well-received.
    • Significant controversy surrounds the data and figures used as the basis for the report's findings.
    • Both the Government and the Registered Nursing Homes Association have publicly questioned the validity of the report's statistics.

    Conclusions:

    • While the direction for improved nursing home care is supported, the evidence base requires scrutiny.
    • Further discussion is needed regarding the data collection and accuracy in nursing home quality assessments.
