Assessment of the Mouth01:26

Assessment of the Mouth

1.4K
A thorough mouth assessment, including inspection and palpation of the lips, gums, tongue, tonsils, uvula, and pharynx, is crucial in detecting potential health issues. Diseases ranging from oral cancer to systemic conditions like diabetes could be identified early through careful oral examination. This article provides a detailed guide on conducting a comprehensive mouth assessment.
Mouth Inspection
The inspection begins with visually examining the mouth for symmetry, color, and size.

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching III: Evaluation and Documentation

2.7K
Evaluation of the teaching process enables the nurse to determine if the patient's learning needs were met and if training was effective. If the expected outcomes are not met, the care plan is revised, and additional education or reinforcement is provided. Nurses can ask questions after the session or obtain feedback to assess the patient's understanding of the topic.
Nurses can use several methods to evaluate patient outcomes. For example, oral questions can assess cognitive learning,...

Summary

A mandatory, faculty-led oral examination preparation program significantly improved the first-time pass rate for the American Board of Surgery Certifying Examination (CE). This program also enhanced resident performance on mock oral exams and the American Board of Surgery In-Training Examination (ABSITE).

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Surgical Training
  • Board Certification Examinations

Background:

  • The American Board of Surgery (ABS) requires general surgery residents to pass written Qualifying Examinations (QE) and oral Certifying Examinations (CE).
  • In 2015, QE and CE pass rates were 80% and 77%, respectively.
  • The University of Wisconsin implemented a mandatory, monthly, faculty-led CE preparation program in 2011-2012.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a formal CE preparation program on the first-time pass rate for the ABS CE.
  • To assess secondary outcomes including QE pass rate, correlation with ABSITE and mock oral scores, and resident perceptions.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was administered to 57 residents who attended the University of Wisconsin between 2007 and 2015.
  • Retrospective analysis of de-identified ABSITE scores, QE, and CE first-time pass rates.
  • Statistical analysis using SPSS version 22, with P < 0.05 considered significant.

Main Results:

  • The first-time CE pass rate increased from 76.0% to 100% after program implementation (P=0.025).
  • Significant improvements were observed in absolute ABSITE scores (P<0.001) and mock oral exam grades (P=0.003).
  • Mock oral scores correlated with passing both QE and CE; ABSITE scores correlated with QE pass rates.

Conclusions:

  • Formal educational programs during residency can enhance resident performance on ABS certifying examinations.
  • The implemented CE preparation program significantly improved first-time CE pass rates and mock oral exam performance.
  • The study highlights the value of structured preparation for surgical board certification.
