Summary

This study shows that reinforcing the round and oval windows surgically improved noise tolerance in severe hyperacusis patients. Patients experienced better quality of life and satisfaction after the minimally invasive procedure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a minimally invasive surgical procedure for severe hyperacusis.
  • To assess improvements in noise tolerance and quality of life following surgical intervention.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, longitudinal study was conducted at a tertiary referral center.
  • Adult patients with severe hyperacusis underwent surgical reinforcement of the round and oval windows using temporalis fascia or tragal perichondrium.
  • Noise tolerance was measured using uncomfortable loudness level (ULL) tests and a hyperacusis questionnaire (HQ) pre- and post-surgery.

  • Postoperative ULL scores improved significantly in both unilateral and bilateral reinforcement groups.
