Summary

A new screening tool, the Screening for complex PTSD (SkPTBS), effectively identifies individuals at risk for complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD). This validated instrument demonstrates high reliability and clinical utility for assessing cPTSD symptoms.

Background:

Chronic interpersonal trauma frequently leads to complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD), a condition recognized in the upcoming ICD-11.
Existing diagnostic tools for cPTSD are limited, necessitating the development of new assessment instruments.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate a screening tool, the Screening for complex PTSD (SkPTBS), for identifying patients at risk of cPTSD.
The SkPTBS assesses traumatic event exposure, risk factors, and cPTSD symptoms.

Main Methods:

The SkPTBS was administered to 325 inpatient psychotherapy patients (mean age 51.5 years, 62.1% female).
Validity was determined by comparing SkPTBS results with final inpatient diagnoses of cPTSD.
Reliability, factor structure, and correlations with other symptom measures (SCL-90-R, BDI-II) were analyzed.

Main Results:

The SkPTBS demonstrated high reliability (Cronbach's α=0.91) and a one-dimensional factor structure.
The screening tool accurately predicted cPTSD diagnoses and correlated with global symptom severity and depressive symptoms.
8.9% of the study participants were diagnosed with cPTSD.

Conclusions:

The SkPTBS is a reliable and valid screening instrument for identifying individuals at risk for cPTSD.
The tool shows significant clinical utility in assessing cPTSD and related symptom severity.
A revised version of the SkPTBS has been developed based on these findings.
