Physical attractiveness (PA) perceptions, both from others and self-appraisals, were examined in early adolescents. Only self-perceived PA, not objective PA, was linked to better adjustment, including self-esteem and lower anxiety.
Area of Science:
- Developmental Psychology
- Social Psychology
- Adolescent Health
Background:
- Adolescence is a critical period for social development and self-perception.
- Physical attractiveness (PA) is often considered a significant factor in adolescent social experiences.
- Understanding the interplay between perceived and objective PA and its impact on adjustment is crucial.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between objective PA (appraisals from others) and subjective PA (self-appraisals) in early adolescents.
- To determine the association of both objective and subjective PA with adolescent adjustment, specifically self-esteem and anxiety.
Main Methods:
- Utilized data from the Pennsylvania Early Adolescent Transitions Study (PEATS).
- Assessed objective PA through external appraisals.
- Measured subjective PA via self-appraisals and examined links to adjustment indicators.
Main Results:
- A low correlation was found between objective and subjective physical attractiveness.
- Only subjective PA demonstrated a significant association with adolescent adjustment.
- Self-perceived physical attractiveness was linked to higher self-esteem and lower anxiety.
Conclusions:
- Self-perception of physical attractiveness plays a more critical role in early adolescent adjustment than external appraisals.
- Interventions focusing on enhancing self-esteem and positive self-perception may be beneficial for adolescent well-being.
- Future research should explore the mechanisms underlying the link between subjective PA and adjustment.
