Synchronous extra-parotid Warthin's tumour.

H Nishikawa, N Kirkham, B M Hogbin

The Journal of Laryngology and Otology
    |August 1, 1989
    PubMed
    Summary

Warthin's tumour, a benign parotid gland neoplasm, can rarely occur in lymph nodes outside the gland. This extra-parotid occurrence is not metastatic and has an excellent prognosis.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Pathology
    • Head and Neck Surgery

    Background:

    • Warthin's tumour (adenolymphoma) is a common benign neoplasm of the parotid gland, accounting for 12% of parotid gland tumors.
    • It is characterized by its cystic and papillary architecture, with a prominent lymphocytic stroma.

    Observation:

    • This report details a rare case of synchronous, extra-parotid Warthin's tumour.
    • The tumour was identified within a peri-parotid lymph node, distinct from the main parotid gland.

    Findings:

    • The extra-parotid occurrence is attributed to embryological salivary gland inclusions within local lymph nodes, not metastatic spread.
    • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of Warthin's tumour in the lymph node.

    Implications:

    • Extra-parotid Warthin's tumours are benign incidental findings with an excellent prognosis.
    • Recognition of this entity is crucial to avoid misdiagnosis as malignancy and unnecessary aggressive treatment.
