Summary

Occupational exposure to psyllium laxative powder caused rhinitis in a nurse with allergies. Nasal challenges confirmed obstruction, and cromolyn provided relief, suggesting this method for diagnosing and treating occupational rhinitis.

Area of Science:

  • Allergy and Immunology
  • Occupational Health

Background:

  • Occupational rhinitis is a common condition affecting healthcare workers.
  • Psyllium, a common ingredient in laxatives, can be an allergen.

Observation:

  • A nurse developed rhinitis symptoms after occupational exposure to psyllium-based laxative powder.
  • The nurse had a history of atopy and elevated antipsyllium IgE levels.

Findings:

  • Nasal airway challenge testing confirmed that psyllium exposure caused isolated nasal obstruction.
  • Treatment with cromolyn successfully relieved the patient's rhinitis symptoms.

Implications:

  • Nasal airway challenge is a valuable tool for diagnosing occupational rhinitis.
  • This study highlights the potential for psyllium to cause occupational allergies.
