Background:

  • Obstructive meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a common condition affecting tear film stability.
  • Lid margin hygiene is crucial for managing MGD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of eyelid margin cleansing using ofloxacin ophthalmic ointment in patients with obstructive MGD.

Main Methods:

  • 31 patients with obstructive MGD received daily eyelid margin cleansing with ofloxacin ointment for 3 months.
  • Lid margin abnormalities, meibum quality, and tear stability were assessed before and after treatment.
  • MGD symptom severity was evaluated using a questionnaire post-treatment.

Main Results:

  • Significant reductions in vascular engorgement, abnormal meibum, debris, and staining were observed.
  • Tear break-up time significantly improved post-treatment (p < 0.05).
  • 86.2% of patients reported improvement in MGD symptoms.

Conclusions:

  • Eyelid margin cleansing with ofloxacin ophthalmic ointment shows promise as an effective treatment for obstructive MGD.
  • This intervention may help alleviate symptoms and improve ocular surface parameters in MGD patients.
