Researchers explored nine low-cost counter electrodes (CEs) for quantum dot solar cells (QDSCs). The carbon fabric/reduced tungsten oxide (C-Fabric/WO3-x) composite CE demonstrated the highest power conversion efficiency, outperforming others.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Renewable Energy
- Electrochemistry
Background:
- Quantum dot solar cells (QDSCs) are a promising photovoltaic technology.
- The counter electrode (CE) plays a critical role in QDSC performance but is often overlooked.
- Developing efficient and cost-effective CEs is crucial for advancing QDSC technology.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate and compare the performance of nine different low-cost counter electrodes for QDSCs.
- To identify the most effective CE material and understand the synergistic effects in composite electrodes.
- To explore the potential of tungsten oxide-based electrodes in QDSC applications.
Main Methods:
- Fabrication of nine distinct CEs using facile and low-cost methods: single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), tungsten oxide (WO3), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), copper sulfide (Cu2S), candle soot, functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (F-MWCNTs), reduced tungsten oxide (WO3-x), carbon fabric (C-Fabric), and C-Fabric/WO3-x.
- Fabrication of QDSCs using a common TiO2/CdS photoanode for all tested CEs.
- Evaluation of CE performance through power conversion efficiency (PCE) and incident photon to current conversion efficiency (IPCE) measurements.
Main Results:
- The C-Fabric/WO3-x composite CE achieved the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.6%, significantly outperforming other CEs.
- Other CEs tested showed PCEs ranging from 2.02% (SWCNTs) to 3.96% (C-Fabric).
- The superior performance of C-Fabric/WO3-x is attributed to the synergistic effects between the low sheet resistance and high surface area of C-Fabric and the electrocatalytic activity and conductivity of WO3-x.
Conclusions:
- The C-Fabric/WO3-x composite material is a highly effective counter electrode for QDSCs, offering a pathway to enhanced device performance.
- Tungsten oxide-based electrodes, particularly in composite forms, show significant promise for QDSC applications due to their ease of fabrication, stability, and scalability.
- This study provides valuable insights for the development of high-performance and cost-effective QDSCs, paving the way for future research into novel composite CEs.
