Summary

In-office dental bleaching is effective for patients with sickle cell disease (SCD), with no significant difference in tooth sensitivity compared to controls. This cosmetic procedure offers a viable option for improving oral aesthetics in individuals with SCD.

Background:

  • Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a prevalent monogenic blood disorder.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of in-office dental bleaching in patients with SCD.
  • To compare tooth sensitivity levels between SCD patients and healthy controls undergoing dental bleaching.

Main Methods:

  • Forty volunteers (20 with SCD, 20 healthy controls) were randomized into four groups.
  • In-office bleaching using 35% hydrogen peroxide with varying light activation protocols was administered.
  • Tooth sensitivity was assessed post-bleaching across all groups and protocols.
