Background:

  • Accurate human milk composition data is essential for establishing nutrient recommended intakes (RNIs).
  • Nationwide data on human milk composition in China was previously unavailable.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish a comprehensive human milk compositional database for China.
  • To provide data for setting RNIs for infants and lactating women.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study involving collection of human milk samples from 11 provinces.
  • Analysis of macronutrients, minerals, B-vitamins, amino acids, and proteins.
  • Evaluation of lactating women's and infants' nutritional and health status.

Main Results:

  • Over 6,400 breast milk samples (colostrum, transitional, mature) were collected and analyzed.
  • Extensive analysis of protein, fat, lactose, minerals, and various B-vitamins was conducted.
  • Ongoing analyses include fatty acids, fat-soluble vitamins, and carotenoids.

Conclusions:

  • A regional human milk compositional database for China is nearing completion.
  • The database is intended to be made available online.
  • This initiative will significantly contribute to infant and maternal nutrition guidelines.
