Autism Spectrum Disorder01:19

Autism Spectrum Disorder

1.5K
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent deficits in social communication and interaction alongside restrictive and repetitive behaviors or interests. ASD is sometimes accompanied by intellectual impairment.
These core symptoms manifest differently among individuals, ranging from mild to severe. The disorder's complexity extends beyond its clinical presentation, encompassing a diverse range of biological, cognitive, and sociocultural influences.

Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

601
Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...

Behavior Modification01:21

Behavior Modification

854
Behavioral approaches have often been criticized for ignoring mental processes and focusing solely on observable behavior. However, these approaches provide an optimistic perspective for individuals seeking to change their behaviors. Rather than concentrating on intrinsic personality traits, behavioral approaches suggest that even longstanding habits can be modified by changing the reward contingencies that maintain them.
A real-world application of operant conditioning principles is applied...

Conduct Disorder01:28

Conduct Disorder

776
Conduct disorder is a complex mental health diagnosis characterized by a repetitive and persistent pattern of behavior that violates societal norms, the rights of others, or age-appropriate rules. The diagnostic criteria for conduct disorder require the presence of at least three problematic behaviors within the past 12 months, with at least one occurring in the past six months. These behaviors are grouped into four categories: aggression toward people and animals; destruction of property;...

Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

652
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.
Participant Modeling
Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in...

Introduction to Psychological Disorders01:19

Introduction to Psychological Disorders

1.5K
Abnormal behavior, often referred to as mental illness, results from changes in brain function that influence thought patterns, behaviors, and social interactions. Psychologists and psychiatrists typically assess abnormal behavior using three primary criteria: deviance, maladaptation, and personal distress, particularly when these traits persist over long periods.
Deviant Behavior
Deviance in behavior refers to actions or thought patterns that significantly diverge from societal norms or...

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Intellectual Disability Research

Background:

  • Challenging behaviors in intellectual disability require further evaluation.
  • Existing assessment tools may not cover all aspects comprehensively.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a short, comprehensive instrument for assessing all facets of challenging behavior.
  • Introduce the Problem Behaviour Checklist (PBCL).

Main Methods:

  • A 28-item scale was constructed and refined through factor analysis to create the PBCL.
  • The PBCL was validated in a randomized controlled trial, assessing interrater reliability and comparing scores with the Modified Overt Aggression Scale (MOAS).

Main Results:

  • The PBCL identified seven factors: personal violence, property violence, self-harm, sexually inappropriate, contrary, demanding, and disappearing behaviors.
  • Factor analysis indicated demanding, violent, and contrary behaviors explained most variance.
  • High interrater reliability (kappa=0.91) and good agreement with MOAS were observed, with PBCL score of 1 showing 97% sensitivity and 85% specificity for MOAS score of 4.

Conclusions:

  • The Problem Behaviour Checklist (PBCL) is a suitable and practical scale for assessing diverse challenging behaviors.
  • The PBCL aids in the comprehensive evaluation of individuals with intellectual disabilities exhibiting challenging behaviors.
