Summary

Internet-based exercise training (e-training) improved muscle strength, lung function, and physical activity in persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). However, e-training did not significantly impact health-related quality of life in this population.

Background:

  • Physical exercise is vital for managing multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • Internet-based exercise training (e-training) offers a scalable approach for remote rehabilitation.
  • The impact of e-training on health-related quality of life (HrQoL) and functional outcomes in persons with MS (pwMS) requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility and effectiveness of a 6-month home-based e-training program for pwMS.
  • To evaluate the impact of e-training on HrQoL, muscle strength, aerobic capacity, lung function, physical activity, and fatigue.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial with a wait-list control group was conducted.
  • 126 pwMS participated in supervised home-based aerobic and strength e-training.
  • Data were collected at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months, analyzed using a hybrid linear model.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements were observed in muscle strength (knee flexion/extension), peak expiratory flow, and sports activity at 3 months.
  • E-training did not yield significant changes in overall HrQoL or fatigue levels.
  • Positive effects on muscle strength, lung function, and physical activity were noted.

Conclusions:

  • Home-based e-training is a feasible and promising approach for supporting individuals with MS.
  • E-training can facilitate large-scale, individualized exercise interventions for pwMS.
  • Further research should explore long-term effects and optimal delivery methods for e-training in MS management.
