Leaky Scanning

5.8K
During most eukaryotic translation processes, the small 40S ribosome subunit scans an mRNA from its 5' end until it encounters the first start AUG codon. The large 60S ribosomal subunit then joins the smaller one to initiate protein synthesis. The location of the translation initiation is largely determined by the nucleotides near the start codon as there may be multiple translation initiation sites present on the mRNA.  Marilyn Kozak discovered that the sequence RCCAUGG (where R...

Scanning Electron Microscopy

5.8K
A scanning electron microscope (SEM) is used to study the surface features of a sample by using an electron beam that scans the sample surface in a two-dimensional manner. Typically, areas between ~1 centimeter to 5 micrometers in width can be imaged. SEM can be used to image bacteria, viruses, tissues as well as larger samples like insects. Conventional SEM gives a magnification ranging from 20X to 30,000X and spatial resolution of 50 to 100 nanometers.

Area of Science:

  • Trauma and Emergency Medicine
  • Psychiatry and Mental Health

Background:

  • The 1998 Omagh bombing resulted in mass casualties, overwhelming local healthcare facilities.
  • Healthcare staff at Tyrone County Hospital and Erne Hospital were directly involved in treating victims.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among doctors in the Sperrin Lakeland Health and Social Care Trust.
  • To understand the psychological impact of the Omagh bombing on frontline medical personnel.

Main Methods:

  • A postal questionnaire survey was administered to all staff of the Sperrin Lakeland Health and Social Care Trust.
  • The study focused on the 41 doctors who responded to the survey.
  • Data collection occurred four months after the bombing incident.

Main Results:

  • The study analyzed the levels of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experienced by the responding doctors.
  • Preliminary findings focus on the psychological sequelae in this specific medical cohort.

Conclusions:

  • The Omagh bombing had a profound psychological impact on healthcare providers.
  • Further analysis is ongoing to fully understand the long-term mental health consequences for medical staff involved in mass casualty events.
