Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between pain characteristics (number of sites and severity) and the Working Life Expectancy Scale (WoLES) in Korean aging workers.
  • To quantify the impact of pain on the perceived working life expectancy of older adults.
  • To provide data for interventions aimed at extending the working lives of older individuals experiencing pain.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from 1,979 participants (1,175 men, 804 women) in the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing.
  • Assessed pain characteristics and WoLES using a self-questionnaire.
  • Employed multiple logistic regression to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for lower WoLES.

Main Results:

  • Increased pain sites were significantly associated with lower WoLES: 1 site (OR 1.75), 2 sites (OR 1.99), and 3+ sites (OR 2.28).
  • Greater pain severity also correlated with lower WoLES: mild (OR 1.74), moderate (OR 2.02), and severe pain (OR 2.12).
  • A significant statistical trend (p<0.001) was observed for both pain sites and severity.

Conclusions:

  • A significant association exists between the Working Life Expectancy Scale and both the total number of pain sites and pain severity in aging workers.
  • Pain characteristics are important factors influencing how long older workers perceive they can continue working.
  • Findings highlight the need to manage pain to support sustained employment among older populations.
