Leaky Scanning

5.8K
During most eukaryotic translation processes, the small 40S ribosome subunit scans an mRNA from its 5' end until it encounters the first start AUG codon. The large 60S ribosomal subunit then joins the smaller one to initiate protein synthesis. The location of the translation initiation is largely determined by the nucleotides near the start codon as there may be multiple translation initiation sites present on the mRNA.  Marilyn Kozak discovered that the sequence RCCAUGG (where R...

Scanning Electron Microscopy

5.8K
A scanning electron microscope (SEM) is used to study the surface features of a sample by using an electron beam that scans the sample surface in a two-dimensional manner. Typically, areas between ~1 centimeter to 5 micrometers in width can be imaged. SEM can be used to image bacteria, viruses, tissues as well as larger samples like insects. Conventional SEM gives a magnification ranging from 20X to 30,000X and spatial resolution of 50 to 100 nanometers.

This summary is machine-generated.

Community matrons in the UK help manage patients with long-term health conditions, aiming to reduce hospital admissions. While popular, demonstrating cost savings from reduced hospitalizations remains a challenge.

Area of Science:

  • Healthcare Management
  • Public Health Policy
  • Chronic Disease Management

Background:

  • 17.5 million people in the UK live with long-term health conditions.
  • Historically, limited opportunities existed for patients to manage health and prevent hospital admissions.
  • Government initiatives aim to improve care and reduce emergency bed days.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the implementation of community matrons for long-term condition management.
  • To assess the impact of intensive home support on preventing hospital admissions.
  • To explore the feasibility and outcomes of the 'Evercare system' model in the UK.

Main Methods:

  • Employment of 3,000 community matrons across England and Wales.
  • Case management of up to 50 patients per matron with long-term conditions.
  • Provision of intensive home support to prevent hospitalizations.

Main Results:

  • The community matron role is proving popular among participants.
  • The primary goal of preventing hospital admissions through intensive home support is being addressed.
  • Demonstrating cost savings directly linked to reduced hospitalizations presents challenges.

Conclusions:

  • Community matrons offer a promising approach to managing long-term conditions and supporting patients at home.
  • The 'Evercare system' model shows potential for improving patient care and reducing hospital burden.
  • Further evaluation is needed to quantify the economic benefits of this healthcare intervention.
