    Area of Science:

    • Dermatology
    • Endocrinology
    • Clinical Medicine

    Context:

    • Diabetes mellitus is frequently associated with various dermatoses.
    • Existing classifications of diabetic dermatoses may not fully capture the complexity of these conditions.
    • Understanding the link between diabetes and skin health is crucial for patient management.

    Purpose:

    • To develop an original classification for dermatoses in patients with diabetes mellitus.
    • To investigate potential common pathophysiological mechanisms underlying dermatoses in diabetes.
    • To correlate clinical and laboratory findings in diabetic patients with specific skin conditions.

    Summary:

    • Analysis of 264 diabetic patients' case histories led to a novel classification of associated dermatoses.
    • Clinical and laboratory data revealed similarities in peripheral blood calcium and immunoreactive insulin levels.
    • These similarities were observed in patients with co-occurring psoriasis, neurodermatitis, and diabetes mellitus.

    Impact:

    • Provides a refined classification system for diabetic dermatoses.
    • Suggests a potential link between calcium/insulin dysregulation and specific skin conditions in diabetics.
    • Highlights the importance of monitoring metabolic parameters in diabetic patients with dermatological issues.
