Summary

Endovenous laser ablation and thigh stripping show high initial success for varicose veins. However, thigh stripping resulted in better long-term venous function recovery compared to laser ablation.

Background:

Varicose veins are a common condition affecting venous function.
Surgical interventions aim to improve symptoms and venous hemodynamics.
Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) and thigh stripping (ST) are established treatments.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare surgical outcomes and venous function between EVLA (980-nm diode laser) and ST.
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of these two varicose vein treatments.

Main Methods:

Comparative study design.
Inclusion of patients undergoing EVLA or ST.
Assessment of surgical outcomes, venous occlusion rates, and venous function via air plethysmography.
Follow-up at 12 months post-operation.

Main Results:

Both EVLA and ST demonstrated 100% initial success rates with no severe complications.
EVLA group showed significant symptom improvement (94.3%), high occlusion (98%), and some endovenous heat-induced thrombosis (11.9%).
While both groups improved postoperative venous function, ST showed superior recovery compared to EVLA.

Conclusions:

Both endovenous laser ablation and thigh stripping are effective initial treatments for varicose veins.
Thigh stripping may offer better long-term recovery of venous function compared to endovenous laser ablation.
Further research into optimizing EVLA techniques for improved venous function is warranted.
