Sustainable Development01:43

Sustainable Development

15.4K
As the human population continues to grow and use resources, we must be mindful of our planet’s natural limits. Sustainable development provides a pathway to maintain and improve human life now while also ensuring that future generations will have the resources that they need. The long-term success of sustainability efforts rests on understanding the interplay between human actions and ecological systems.

Population Growth00:57

Population Growth

29.4K
Population size is dynamic, increasing with birth rates and immigration, and decreasing with death rates and emigration. In ideal conditions with unlimited resources, populations can increase exponentially, which plots as a J-shaped growth rate curve of population size against time. This type of curve is characteristic of newly-introduced invasive species, or populations that have suffered catastrophic declines and are rebounding.

Modeling with Differential Equations01:25

Modeling with Differential Equations

144
Population dynamics can be described mathematically by considering the population size P(t) as a function of time. The rate of change of the population is then represented by the derivative of P(t). A simple assumption is that the rate of growth is proportional to the size of the population itself. This leads to an exponential growth model, where the population increases rapidly without bound. While this is a useful first approximation, it does not reflect realistic long-term...

Growth Models with Integration: Problem Solving

85
In population modeling, integration provides a systematic way to determine accumulated quantities from known rates of change. One such application arises in ecology, where the total weight of a fish population in a body of water is referred to as its biomass. When the rate of growth of this biomass is known as a function of time, calculus can be used to determine the total biomass at a future date.Growth Rate and Biomass FunctionLet the growth rate of the fish population be represented by a...

Trophic Efficiency00:46

Trophic Efficiency

25.7K
Trophic level transfer efficiency (TLTE) is a measure of the total energy transfer from one trophic level to the next. Due to extensive energy loss as metabolic heat, an average of only 10% of the original energy obtained is passed on to the next level. This pattern of energy loss severely limits the possible number of trophic levels in a food chain.

Bioremediation00:46

Bioremediation

22.7K
Bioremediation is the use of prokaryotes, fungi, or plants to remove pollutants from the environment. This process has been used to remove harmful toxins in groundwater as a byproduct of agricultural run-off and also to clean up oil spills.

Summary

Economic growth, measured by Gross Domestic Product (GDP), cannot be separated from environmental impact. Focusing on GDP growth is misleading; societal wellbeing, not GDP, should be the primary goal for sustainability.

Area of Science:

  • Environmental economics
  • Ecological economics
  • Sustainable development

Background:

  • The concept of decoupling economic growth from environmental impact is widely discussed.
  • Decoupling suggests that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth can be sustained without increasing environmental degradation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the feasibility of decoupling economic growth (GDP) from environmental impacts.
  • To evaluate the sustainability of GDP growth as a societal goal.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a simple model illustrating economic growth and environmental impact.
  • Comparison of the model with historical data and future projections.

Main Results:

  • The study demonstrates that GDP growth cannot ultimately be decoupled from material and energy use.
  • Historical data and projections indicate a persistent link between economic expansion and resource consumption.

Conclusions:

  • Policies based on the expectation of decoupling are potentially misleading.
  • GDP is an inadequate measure of societal wellbeing; a shift towards broader wellbeing indicators is necessary for sustainable societal improvement.
