Leaky Scanning

5.8K
During most eukaryotic translation processes, the small 40S ribosome subunit scans an mRNA from its 5' end until it encounters the first start AUG codon. The large 60S ribosomal subunit then joins the smaller one to initiate protein synthesis. The location of the translation initiation is largely determined by the nucleotides near the start codon as there may be multiple translation initiation sites present on the mRNA.  Marilyn Kozak discovered that the sequence RCCAUGG (where R...

Scanning Electron Microscopy

5.8K
A scanning electron microscope (SEM) is used to study the surface features of a sample by using an electron beam that scans the sample surface in a two-dimensional manner. Typically, areas between ~1 centimeter to 5 micrometers in width can be imaged. SEM can be used to image bacteria, viruses, tissues as well as larger samples like insects. Conventional SEM gives a magnification ranging from 20X to 30,000X and spatial resolution of 50 to 100 nanometers.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Nursing Science
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Medication management is crucial for older adults, especially those with multiple daily doses.
  • Community nurses play a vital role in supporting medication adherence in this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of community nurse interventions on medication adherence in older adults.
  • To identify key interventions that improve self-reported adherence.

Main Methods:

  • A study involving 113 older adults taking over 12 daily medication doses.
  • Interventions included client/carer assessment, education, supportive systems (e.g., blister packs), and regular reviews.
  • Self-reported adherence was measured using targeted questions about forgetting or altering medication intake.

Main Results:

  • Various interventions were implemented to assist patients with complex medication schedules.
  • The study focused on improving patient understanding and administration of medications.
  • Self-reporting assessed adherence challenges like forgetting or stopping medication.

Conclusions:

  • Community nursing interventions can positively impact medication adherence in older adults.
  • Multifaceted support, including education and administration aids, is essential for managing complex medication regimens.
  • Further research can explore specific intervention effectiveness on adherence rates.
