Background:

  • Orbital exenteration and irradiation for retinoblastoma can lead to severe anophthalmic socket contracture.
  • Less-vascularized cicatricial conjunctiva is a primary cause of these deformities.
  • Existing reconstructive methods may not fully address significant orbital volume loss and deformity.

Observation:

  • Three patients presented with orbital region deformity and contracted eye sockets post-infantile retinoblastoma treatment.
  • The deformities were linked to the compromised conjunctival tissue remaining after initial treatment.
  • A microvascular free radial forearm flap was employed to address these issues.

Findings:

  • The free vascularized radial forearm flap successfully created a large, permanent eye socket.
