Introduction To Health Care Delivery System01:18

Introduction To Health Care Delivery System

The healthcare system is constantly changing and complex. Various services are available from different healthcare providers, but gaining access to these services has become challenging for people with limited healthcare insurance. Uninsured people present a challenge to healthcare because they frequently postpone or forego treatment.
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) advocates for a patient-centered, effective, safe, timely, equitable, and effective healthcare system. The National Priorities...
Methods Of Healthcare Delivery System01:26

Methods Of Healthcare Delivery System

At the different levels of the healthcare system, we see varying methods of healthcare used. These methods include managed care systems, case management, and primary healthcare.
Managed Care System:
The managed care system is designed to control the cost while maintaining the quality of care. The patient's care from admission to discharge is planned by the primary care provider or the case manager, also known as the gatekeeper. In a managed care system, the number of care providers is limited...
Preventive Healthcare Services01:30

Preventive Healthcare Services

Preventive healthcare services keep people healthy via frequent check-ups, screening, and counseling. They primarily aid in disease prevention rather than treating an acute or chronic illness. Preventive treatment also keeps individuals productive and energetic, allowing them to work well into their retirement years. Examples of preventive care services include:
Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures01:22

Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures

Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility.
The best practices for preventing healthcare-associated infections include hand hygiene, patient risk...
Teeth01:15

Teeth

The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin and...
Tooth Anatomy01:21

Tooth Anatomy

The human tooth enables us to eat a variety of foods, speak clearly, and even aid in shaping our faces. Teeth are composed of various elements that work together. Here's a detailed look at the anatomy of a human tooth.
The Crown, Neck, and Root
The visible part of the tooth is referred to as the crown. It's covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The crown is uniquely shaped for each type of tooth, allowing for different functions such as cutting, tearing, or grinding food.

    Summary

This study shows a new preventive dentistry system effectively reduced new cavities and stopped existing ones from growing in young adults. It also helped maintain good gum health during the two-year test.

    Area of Science:

    • Preventive Dentistry
    • Cariology
    • Periodontology

    Background:

    • Dental caries and gingivitis are significant oral health concerns.
    • Effective preventive strategies are crucial for maintaining oral health in private practice settings.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop and evaluate a novel preventive dentistry delivery system for maximum effectiveness in private practice.
    • To assess the system's impact on the incidence and progression of dental caries and the maintenance of gingival health.

    Main Methods:

    • A two-year exploratory study was conducted on two groups of patients (10-20 years old and 21-30 years old at baseline).
    • The study monitored the development of new carious lesions (pit/fissure, smooth surface, proximal) and the progression of incipient lesions.
    • Gingival health was assessed throughout the study period.

    Main Results:

    • In patients aged 10-20, only four new pit or fissure carious lesions developed; no new smooth surface lesions occurred.
    • No increase in existing incipient lesions was observed in most cases (23/26 pit/fissure, 24-25/26 proximal, 26/26 smooth surface).
    • In patients aged 21-30, no new lesions appeared, and the progression of 142 incipient lesions was arrested. A low level of gingivitis was maintained in all participants.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed preventive dentistry delivery system demonstrated high effectiveness in reducing new caries incidence in young adults.
    • The system successfully arrested the progression of existing incipient carious lesions and maintained good gingival health.
    • This approach shows promise for implementation in private dental practices to improve patient oral health outcomes.
