Summary

The transareolar-periareolar (TAPA) incision offers a viable alternative for breast augmentation in Asian women with smaller areolae. This technique demonstrated high patient satisfaction and maintained nipple sensation with minimal complications.

Background:

  • Periareolar incisions for breast augmentation are limited by areolar diameter, particularly in Asian women.
  • Traditional transareolar approaches can lead to problematic scarring and risks of ductal injury or capsular contracture.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a novel transareolar-periareolar (TAPA) incision for breast augmentation.
  • To assess outcomes in Asian women with smaller areolae using the TAPA technique.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of 11 augmentation mammoplasties using the TAPA incision between 2013 and 2015.
  • The TAPA incision involves three inverted V's traversing the inferior areolar border.
  • Outcomes were assessed via photographs, clinical charts, and patient surveys.

  • No hematomas or infections were reported in 20 incisions.
  • One case each of seroma (9.1%) and unilateral capsular contracture (9.1%) occurred.
