Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with unemployment, fatigue, physical disability, cognitive, and psychological issues.
  • Workplace accidents (AWE) are a growing concern for individuals with MS.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of AWE in employed MS patients.
  • To identify clinical differences between employed (MSe) and unemployed (MSu) MS patients regarding AWE.
  • To explore the relationship between psychological factors and AWE in MS.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty MS patients (31 employed, 29 unemployed) and 20 healthy controls were recruited.
  • Employed participants completed a questionnaire on AWE and risks in the past 2 months.
  • Physical, cognitive, mood, and fatigue assessments were conducted.

Main Results:

  • Illness, bumps, risk of bumps, and near falls were the most frequent AWE in MSe.
  • AWE correlated more strongly with anxiety, depression, and cognitive fatigue than physical impairment severity.
  • Psychological aspects like anxiety and anger played a significant role in AWE occurrence.

Conclusions:

  • AWE are common in employed MS patients, influenced by psychological factors.
  • Preventive strategies for AWE in MS should address psychological well-being and cognitive fatigue.
  • Understanding these factors can improve workplace safety for individuals with MS.
