Background:

  • Childhood obesity is a growing concern linked to cardiovascular disease.
  • Visceral adipose tissue (VAT) accumulation is associated with health risks in adults.
  • Limited data exists on gender differences in childhood visceral obesity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish reference values for VAT in healthy 10-11 year old children.
  • To investigate gender-specific differences in VAT distribution.
  • To provide data for identifying children at risk for obesity-related health issues.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional study of 217 healthy children aged 10-11 years.
  • Measurements included height, weight, waist circumference (WC), and BMI.
  • Body composition, including VAT, was assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA).

Main Results:

  • Girls had higher total fat mass (TFM) but lower VAT than boys.
  • Boys exhibited higher lean body mass (LBM) compared to girls.
  • Significant correlations were observed between WC, BMI, and VAT in both genders.

Conclusions:

  • Gender-specific differences in VAT percentiles were identified in healthy children.
  • These findings can serve as reference values for pediatric visceral obesity assessment.
  • Girls tend to have more TFM but less VAT and LBM than boys, independent of BMI and WC.
