Epistaxis, or nosebleeds, occurs when small, swollen blood vessels in the nasal mucous membrane rupture. Typically, the anterior septum is the primary site of occurrence.

Intravenous regional anesthesia or the Bier block technique is used to anesthetize a specific limb or extremity. It uses exsanguinated or blood-drained vessels to transport local anesthetics or LAs to the peripheral nerve trunks. Lidocaine without vasoconstrictors like epinephrine is most commonly used for this technique. Other drugs used are prilocaine, ropivacaine, and chloroprocaine. Summary

Identifying posterior epistaxis bleeding sites is crucial. Prophylactic electrocoagulation significantly reduced rebleeding rates in patients undergoing endoscopic bipolar electrocautery for posterior nosebleeds.

  • Retrospective study of 318 patients with posterior epistaxis treated with endoscopic bipolar electrocautery.
  • Comparison of rebleeding rates between patients with observation (Group A) and prophylactic electrocoagulation (Group B).

  • Bleeding sites were identified in 263 patients, predominantly on the lateral nasal wall (166) and septum (86).
