Summary

A neurofibroma, a benign nerve sheath tumor, was found in a 37-year-old male. Imaging revealed a retroperitoneal mass near the kidney and spine, compressing the vena cava.

Defining Gene Functions in Tumorigenesis by Ex vivo Ablation of Floxed Alleles in Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor Cells

Background:

Neurofibromas are benign tumors arising from peripheral nerve sheaths.
They can be localized or diffuse, with diffuse forms associated with Von Recklinghausen disease (NF-1).
This case presents a rare retroperitoneal neurofibroma.

Observation:

A 37-year-old asymptomatic male presented with a retroperitoneal mass.
Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) identified the tumor.
The mass was located near the right kidney, psoas muscle, and spine, compressing the inferior vena cava.

Findings:

The imaging could not definitively determine invasion into adjacent structures.
The tumor's precise origin and extent remained unclear.
Differential diagnosis for retroperitoneal masses was considered.

Implications:

This case highlights the importance of comprehensive imaging in diagnosing retroperitoneal masses.
Understanding the presentation of neurofibromas is crucial for appropriate management.
Further investigation into therapeutic options and disease management is warranted.
