    Summary

Double orifice mitral valve, a rare congenital heart defect, is often linked to atrioventricular defects. Echocardiography effectively diagnosed the central type in four pediatric patients, revealing associated atrial septal defects.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Pediatric Cardiology
    • Congenital Heart Disease

    Background:

    • Double orifice mitral valve ( a rare congenital anomaly, often associated with atrioventricular defects.
    • Classification includes central, commissural, and valvar types based on structure.

    Observation:

    • Cross-sectional echocardiography was used to diagnose four patients with the central type of double orifice mitral valve.
    • Patient ages ranged from 3 months to 17 years.
    • Three patients had an associated ostium primum atrial septal defect.

    Findings:

    • Echocardiography successfully identified the central type of double orifice mitral valve.
    • Parasternal short axis views provided information on the central type.
    • Parasternal long and subcostal four-chamber views were optimal for visualizing subvalvular structures and papillary muscle chordal insertion.

    Implications:

    • Echocardiography is a valuable tool for diagnosing double orifice mitral valve, particularly the central type.
    • Accurate visualization of subvalvular apparatus is crucial for understanding the anomaly.
    • Early diagnosis and characterization aid in managing associated cardiac defects.
