Background:

  • Amblyopia, or "lazy eye," is a common cause of reduced vision in children.
  • Poor compliance with prescribed patching is a significant barrier to effective amblyopia treatment.
  • Alternative methods are needed to improve adherence to patching regimens.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility and acceptability of using elbow splints to enhance patching compliance in pediatric amblyopia patients.
  • To determine if elbow splints can overcome non-adherence to traditional patching protocols.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of pediatric patients (<6 years) with amblyopia non-compliant with patching were prescribed elbow splints.
  • Parents were instructed to use splints to ensure children wore their patches as prescribed.
  • Wilcoxon signed-rank tests compared patching duration before and after splint intervention.

Main Results:

  • 83% (34/41) of patients achieved compliance with patching after using elbow splints.
  • Visual acuity improved in 95% (39/41) of patients; no fellow eye amblyopia developed.
  • Elbow splints were typically required for a median of 7 days to establish compliance.

Conclusions:

  • Elbow splinting is a viable and effective strategy for improving pediatric amblyopia patching compliance.
  • This intervention offers a solution when standard patching regimens are insufficient.
  • Successful compliance through splinting leads to improved visual outcomes in amblyopic children.
