Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Internal Medicine
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Comorbidity in chronic constipation is understudied, despite constipation being a symptom of various disorders.
  • Constipation can be linked to neurological, systemic, intestinal, and non-intestinal conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of somatic comorbidity in a population sample with constipation.
  • To compare individuals with constipation and comorbid conditions to those with presumed functional constipation.

Main Methods:

  • A telephone survey identified 1037 individuals with constipation.
  • 589 participants completed a postal questionnaire on sociodemographics, symptoms, comorbidities, and medication.
  • Comorbid and non-comorbid constipation groups were compared.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Individuals with somatic comorbidity and/or regular medication were older (63.8 vs. 43.7 years) and had lower health/social status than those with functional constipation.
  • Physical quality-of-life was significantly lower in the comorbid group.
  • Mental health domains differed between functional constipation subtypes.

Conclusions:

  • Somatic comorbidity is more prevalent than functional constipation alone in an unselected constipated population.
  • Constipation with comorbid conditions is associated with older age and poorer health status.
